Never too old for kicking it up a little…

Dear Editor:

It’s a “Hee Haw» kinda Friday…it was closing time at the Post 558 Social Quarters (ok, ok – it’s the bar)…the Post closes at 7pm sharp everyday including weekends…this allows exactly 1 hour to get the bar staff back to “the home” before they lock the front door at 8 pm…

At about 4 minutes before 7 two women walked in carrying guitar cases…those of us in the social quarters were in the process of saying our “good nights” when bewilderment set in…the women stated that they were there for the “picking session”…we knew they were in the wrong place — nothing happens at Post 558 after 7pm!…we speculated that perhaps they were looking for The Moose — or The Eagles will occasionally have entertainment…after a couple minutes of back-n-forth it was determined that the most likely spot was the Farwell Senior Citizens Center…
After giving them “female” directions (a left- 2 rights-another left and then it will be right there – you can’t miss it; men foolishly use north-south-east-west) we all bundled up and made our way out…some of the folks were going to The Moose for a burger; I had been working all day and just wanted to go home…the unnamed spouse consented but I knew she wasn’t ready to call it quits…so I suggested we swing by the Senior Citizens Center to see if the two gals made it ok…guess who had the microphone and was singing old style country as we walked in?…yup!! the two wanderers who had stopped in at Post 558…

Well, the unnamed spouse took a few pictures and sent them to our friends!…you can imagine the guffaws and remarks that ensued because I had taken my wife to the Senior Citizen Center instead of The Moose for a burger…well, here’s the thing!…the “old geezers” were just getting started about the time we jet-setters had turned out the lights and called it a night…

The Senior Citizen Center was rocking – Post 558 was as dark as the back of a nun’s habit…fun is where you find it!…for SH fun is diagraming a sentence from the works of Dickens…for my good friend RS fun is refinishing his picnic table to insure that not one splinter remains (you can imagine why — dark night, campfire and only the picnic table to “set” on…)…for RM092455 the ultimate in fun is riding the backroads of Clare county with her camera and taking stills of old barns…it’s all good!!…

The folks at the Senior Citizens Center decided that fun on Friday night was getting together with their friends, picking a little music and doing the 2-step around the floor…I sat for awhile and watched this parade of talent…I realized that many of these folks had already buried a spouse…many may have said goodbye to a child or two…friends had already departed…some were fighting cancer…you get the point – they had all lived long enough that not one of them was untouched by life’s hazards!!…but instead of curling up in the fetal position and being all hang-dog they had decided to shake the dust off their ass, leave the house and kick it up a little!!…

God Bless them all!!…of course, I had to hear the jokes about being with the “geezers” and how no one with a full set of teeth was allowed admittance to the Senior Citizens Center…just for the record — they all had teeth!! it is just that some of them had their teeth in their pocket…meanwhile, back at Post 558 all was quiet and secure as “the warriors of The American Legion” were settling in for a long winter’s nap…the ducks on the pond do their share of pickin’…and Mother Parker assures us she will be ready in the morning to start Saturday off with a brisk beginning.
