August 9, 2018

Dear Editor:
Opioid treatment has long existed within the state of Michigan but only just recently were the effects and dependence rates of opiates revealed.

What was once thought of as a miracle drug is now considered a costly and problematic drug capturing lives throughout the state.
Of the 930 opioid-related overdose deaths in Michigan between 2009 and 2012, 818 (88%) died from opioids without heroin involvement.

Although most devastating opioid related deaths are not the only cause for concern when it comes to the use of opiates.

The number of opioid-related hospitalizations in Michigan has increased 136.9% between 2000 and 2013. Consequently, the number of people admitted for prescription drug treatment increased by 369% from 2000 to 2011.

I am writing this piece not only as a professional but as an individual who has personally been impacted by addiction.
As an adult child of addicts, I know all too well the chaos and destruction of addiction.

This is a problem that reaches much farther than the addict or the patient.

Senate Bill No. 0272 will require a licensed prescriber to inform all patients on the risks associated with opiate use including addiction; inform clients on proper disposal of a controlled substance; and of potential criminal penalties associated with obtaining this substance.

I am asking anyone who has been, known, or loved an addict to support this bill by contacting it’s sponsor Representative Mike Shirkey at Senate House P.O. Box 30036 Lansing, MI 48909-7536 requesting that this bill be reviewed and passed.
