Response to Vogel letter on windfarms

January 11, 2018

Dear Editor,

In response to Ms. Vogel:
Excuse me. The only thing that is quite obvious is that you are part of a small group of misinformed people who have not done their homework.

First of all, every landowner in the footprint of the windfarms will get paid if they lease their land. Once in production the annual rate is $60.00 per acre, $1,000.00 per occupied residence, $3,000.00 if you host a turbine using up to 1 acre, and $3,500.00 for a meteorological tower. Access roads, cable routes and all are paid for.  This is a landowner friendly lease designed by Isabella County farmers.

Now to the health and safety issues. Our township zoning boards’ investigation found no credible evidence of any health and safety issues. Check out the Saginaw News, 6-28-17 the peer reviewed science data and various government reports in U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.K. refute the claim that windfarms cause negative health impacts. The article in the Saginaw News is well worth reading. It contains an interview with folks who have a turbine on their land in Gratiot County and hoping to get one on their farm in Isabella. There are words from a few that are unhappy. The worst claim is that it upset their rural setting.

Few people knew you say. This project has been in motion for over two years. 43,000 of the 60,000 acre farm that Apex would like to lease have been signed. People who attend their community meeting know what’s happening locally.

Let’s see now to your accusation of tax subsidies. Sorry, wrong again, Ms. Vogel. Apex is funded solely by private investment money.

Ms. Vogel, you seem to be missing the big picture here. Your concern about owls and eagles is shared by us – but we are also very concerned about the future. The world’s top scientists agree that burning fossil fuels is speeding global warming. We have been warned! Believe in global warming or not – we do not have the right to gamble with the future. It doesn’t belong to us.

Finally, Ms. Vogel you gave some pretty good advice in your response to my first letter. “Make sure you educate yourself and listen to the rest of the story.” I suggest that you follow that advice.

Richard Los Sr.
