There is final justice!

Dear Editor:

It’s a “Final Justice” kinda Friday…Sal, you are my friend and I know that your grief is immeasurable…no one should ever have to bury one of their children; it is out of nature’s natural order…sadly, it does happen…sometimes we lose our children to disease, sometimes it is due to a tragic accident and sometimes it happens at the hands of others…I have never had the experience, but I doubt that the numbing pain of such a loss would be any less regardless of how our child is taken from us!…

Sal, I will not patronize you with the usual platitudes that are offered when sadness strikes; I will not attempt to diminish your sense of loss by rebutting your assertions in the letter you published…As your friend, I will remain by your side and just know that you are hurting…Sal, I will also let you know that I share in your sense of outrage at how William’s demise occurred and at how the aftermath was “professionally” engineered…neither you nor I were present at William’s death; we are left to depend on the words of others — the officers involved, the investigators, the prosecutors, the courts and the witnesses ( I put the witnesses last because their words seems to carry the least amount of importance)…

Sal, my friend, you and I have spoken about this several times; I know you are seeking some sort of justice for Williamsome of the characterizations you make in your letter are the uncontrolled outpouring of a broken & angry heart; I believe anyone reading your letter will grant you that much…the part that is incredulous to me is the assertion by the officers on the scene that they had no other alternative than to shoot William…seriously? an unarmed (no firearm at least — requiring close range contact for William to be a threat) man who is just over 5 feet tall, weighs about 110 pounds, was blind in one eye and walked with a cane had to be shot 5 times — and maybe at least once in the back?…

┬áSal, I mean no disrespect but I am thinking my cat could have dealt with William more effectively…all over America there are cases where men twice William’s size who are “armed & dangerous” are subdued without being shot 5 times…of course that would mean exercising restraint, calling for back up and keeping a cool head; who knows? we are left to the words of others but simple thought makes the events seem unwarranted…the part I find most remarkable, Sal, is that all 5 shots came from one gun; the “other” officer had no need to discharge his weapon while his partner was so threatened that he had to empty his firearm?…that at least deserves an exhaustive hearing (not a Norm Gage referendum), a citizen review board and hopefully a trial…what would be so wrong with the rule that every death caused by a firearm required an automatic trial?…anyway, Sal, here is what I am saying; I know you are seeking some justice for William but, my friend, you will not find it in this life…especially in Clare county…

It was interesting that your letter was published right next to a family with similar concerns to yours…I know others in Clare county who have had the same experience with the police and legal system — although not involving the death of a child…my father-in-law (who is no longer with us) was fond saying “there is no justice”…that is only partially true…

Sal, you will not find what you seek in ordinary terms…keep in mind that the police of all jurisdictions, the investigators, the prosecutors, and the courts are all on the same team…to ask them to be objective and find fault with one of their own would be like asking Prince Fielder to call balls & strikes on himself…it won’t happen fairly…and the citizens of the county take their part as well…

Sal, there is a simple reason for this…if the police are always right and the fault always lies with the victims, such as William, then we excuse ourselves from ever being victims — because whatever it was that William was doing, we would never do it!…it is the same mentality that prevails when a woman is raped…we immediately look to what she was wearing, where she had been, how flirtatious she was and how sexual she was prior to being violated…if we can shine the blame back on the victim then we inoculate ourselves from ever being the victim because, God knows, we would never be in that situation…

So, Sal, the deck is stacked against you…but here is the good news…there is a Final Justice!!…every religion and school of philosophical thought holds this truth…”what a man sows, he reaps”…”you will be repaid in your own coin”…”karma”…”what goes around comes around”…they all carry the same message — there is a Final Justice!!…there is a reckoning!!…and you, Sal, have to do nothing…it will happen…throughout history it always has; it always will…that is a promise that has been made to us by a Power greater than those who wear blue uniforms…

Sal, try to accept that this is beyond any man’s ability to sort out….the team you are fighting will stick together; they have to…if they ever found fault or guilt in one of their own, the pack would begin to fall apart…the whole robe of justice would begin to unravel and pretty soon everyone in Clare would have to go all the way to Mt. Pleasant to get a fresh donut…Sal, they will never let THAT happen…

My dear friend, please continue to love William knowing that he has already received justice and that Final Justice will prevail!!…you can count on it!!…the ducks on the pond take no revenge but their flock is always ordered by natural justice…and Mother Parker urges you to think of William each morning as you have your first cup of morning brew — William is OK and you will be too!!
