Mid Michigan Heat girls 12U travel softball started its’ summer tournament schedule strong winning the Saginaw Bay Riverbrawl USSSA World Series Qualifier held in Auburn on May 12-13. This is the first season for this new team which is comprised of girls from Gladwin, Beaverton, Clare and Farwell.
In game 1, the girls faced the Midland Lady Explorers Red team taking a 4-1 win. Kaytlin Hall and Peyton Hubel had 2 singles and Makayla Bassage and Alia Bittner each had a single. Molly Davis scored 2 runs off walks. Hubel had 1 RBI and Hall had 3 RBI’s. Hall took the win on the mound pitching all 6 innings.
Game 2, the Heat faced the Midland Lady Explorers Blue team taking a 6-3 win. Hall had 2 base hits and Hubel and Cami Miller each had hits. Hailey Hochstetler scored 2 runs off walks. Bassage had 2 RBI’s and Bittner had 1. Hall pitched all 5 innings striking out 10 and earning the win.
In game 3, the Heat faced the Lightning from Bay City/Essexville and took a 6-3 win. Hubel led the batting with two doubles, Haley Miller had a double, Hall had 2 singles and Faith Howe and Lexi Harton both had hits. Hall had 2 RBI’s and Howe, Bassage and Harton each had 1. Faith Howe pitched 4 innings striking out 7 to take the win on the mound while Hall closed the final inning with 3 strikeouts.
Game 4 against the Pinconning Thunder turned into a pitching duel with the Heat coming out on top 2-0. In the 4th inning, Hall singled and Bassage was able to steal 1st base from a 3rd strike drop. Cami Miller stepped to the plate with two outs and singled driving in Hall and Bassage for a 2 run Heat lead, which they were able to hold onto. Hubel also singled in the 6th. Hall pitched 7 innings for the Heat, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks and striking out 11.
In the championship game, the Heat faced the Midland Lady Explorers Blue again winning 7-3. Hochstetler led the hitting with a triple, double and single and 3 RBI’s. Bassage had a double and single and RBI. Hall and Hubel both had hits and RBI’s also went to Hubel and Bittner. Davis was again able to capitalize on a walk scoring for the Heat. Hall took the win on the mound going the distance and pitching 6 innings with 10 strikeouts.
The Heat is coached by Dave Miller of Clare and Rob Hall, Dina Howe and Mike Bassage of Beaverton. Winning the inaugural tournament qualified the girls to go to the World Series tournament in Orlando, Florida in July if they choose to go.
