Five area men, Lynnwood Whitehead, Kenneth Holmes, John Bedford, Brian McCarthy and Robert McCarthy, are behind bars for the burglary of Bennett’s Auto Repair in Evart. The men are also considered suspects in several other area thefts committed across several Central Michigan counties over the past several months.
Police have confirmed that two of the men were originally apprehended for an unrelated crime. Additional information led police to the whereabouts of the other three men. Police also recovered two rifles that had been tossed into the Hersey River that are believed to be connected to the case.
Last January $60,000 worth of automotive tools and computers was stolen from Bennett’s Auto Repair. Police have confirmed that most of the $60,000 worth of equipment taken from Bennett’s has been recovered.
Four of the five men appeared in Osceola County’s 77th District Court on Friday.
Whitehead was charged with receiving and concealing stolen property as well as for breaking and entering. Bedford and both McCarthys were charged with receiving and concealing stolen property.
All five suspects made bond after Friday’s arraignments. More charges are expected to be brought against the men as the investigation continues.
