August 27, 2015

8-28-15 CraftingFall is nearly here and we have some crafty ideas to fill those long winter months when the weather keeps you indoors.

No matter what age you are, crafting is an activity that is enjoyable and beneficial. Crafting helps stimulate the mind, reduces stress and it can also be a productive hobby. You will often find yourself completely focused on the project at hand and be rewarded when you see the results of what you created.

You can find all of the materials you need to start a project at a local craft store and there are several in the area.

Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a great craft idea to try, especially if you have boxes of photographs that need organizing. Sort through photos and mementos and see if you can come up with a common theme to make pages or books out of. The nice thing about scrapbooking is it can be as simple or as complex as you want. A scrapbook is also a sentimental heirloom to pass along to your loved ones, and Christmas is just around the corner.

Mosaic Art

Use different shaped colored paper, stones or tiles to create a unique piece of mosaic art. For design ideas, sketch something beforehand or have a picture in front of you as you work on your mosaic. You can glue your mosaic onto thick poster board or wood, depending on the materials you use. This type of craft is simple and can be worked on over the course of several days or weeks, depending on how much time you want to dedicate to it. This project is also beneficial. The different colors and shapes of this craft stimulate brain cells as you put together your patterned design.

Painting

Keep your creativity flowing and discover your inner Picasso. Take up painting and see what masterpieces you come up with. Maybe you like painting landscapes, people or designs. You don’t have to only paint on canvas. You can paint pottery, wood and glassware. Remember, the paintings don’t need to be perfect by any means. Simply have fun and express yourself.

Knitting or Crocheting

Knitting or crocheting is a time consuming craft that can be done anywhere. You can start with easy patterns and work your way up to more complex projects. If you have poor eyesight or arthritis, don’t discount this idea entirely. There are a variety of sizes of needles and different types of yarn. Use large needles or a large hook and bold colored yarn to ease strain on your hands and eyes. If you become really good at it, pass along your creations as gifts for loved ones.
