An accident on Bringold Avenue October 27 led to a fire that completely destroyed a 1997 Pontiac, and to a search for the driver of the vehicle, Nicholas Smith.
According to a release from the Clare County Sheriff’s Department, the department was notified of a single vehicle accident on Bringold, south of Washington Road. Shortly after receiving the first call, a second came in reporting that the vehicle was on fire.
When deputies arrived they found the vehicle completely engulfed and officers said they couldn’t tell if the vehicle was occupied. Surrey Fire Department assisted at the scene, but the 1997 Pontiac four-door vehicle was a total loss.
Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the driver of the vehicle. About two hours after the first call came in Smith returned to the scene. He told deputies he was alone in the vehicle when he lost control, hit and tree and rolled once. He said the vehicle then caught on fire.
Smith was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center – Clare for minor injuries.
Deputies said alcohol was a factor in the accident and charges against Smith are pending.
