Clare and Gladwin County officers are looking for suspects in a rash of robberies in the Amish community recently.
Clare County Sheriff John Wilson said he is only aware of one incident in Clare County, but the Michigan State Police are handling other incidents that have been reported in Gladwin County. “We have some suspects, but details are not being released,” he said, adding that “the investigation is still underway.”
The Clare County incident happened on Beaverton Road east of Tobacco Road just after midnight on May 23 when the driver of an Amish buggy was robbed. The incident report said that a man driving a vehicle stopped the Amish victim and threatened him with a shotgun, demanding money.
The victim, whose name is not being released, lives in Gladwin County and was on his way home when the robbery happened. Wilson said he didn’t want to release any more about the robbery because of the investigation and the Amish request for privacy.
“The Amish community is very quiet and does not like publicity,” Wilson said. “We try to respect that.”
