A 50-year-old Coleman man may be facing life in prison for allegedly attempting to murder his 27-year-old son last Saturday with a claw hammer.

Jeffery Lyn Barager of 6495 North East County Line Road in Isabella County’s Wise Township was arrested after his son, also of Coleman, went to a nearby home, covered in blood, to ask for help. He told Michigan State Police Troopers that his father had “struck him in the head with an unknown object” after the two had a “heated argument.”

Alcohol was believed to have been a factor, Troopers said.

The victim was taken to McLaren Central Michigan Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, and then transferred to St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw where he was treated for a skull fracture, according to State Police Sgt. Jeff White of Mt. Pleasant.

Barager was arrested and taken to the Isabella County Jail where he was charged with five felony counts: assault with intent to murder; assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder; assault with a dangerous weapon; domestic violence – aggravated (2nd offense); and with operating a vehicle with license suspended (2nd offense). Bond was set by the Magistrate at $100,000 – 10 percent. He posted bond and was released over the weekend.

Barager was arraigned March 19 Isabella County Trial Court on the charges and his bond was increased to $600,000 cash as requested by Isabella County Senior Assistant Prosecutor Stuart Black, who asked Judge William Rush for the higher bond because of the severity of the charges and Barager’s criminal record.

He is being represented by Attorney Dwight Carpenter. According to court records Barager has been previously charged with attempted larceny, marijuana possession, driving while drunk and domestic violence.

He remains lodged in the Isabella County Jail. A preliminary exam date had not been set at press time.
