Clare Rotary’s 4th annual Brewfest in Clare will be held August 16 this year.
Forty breweries and wineries will be represented and more than 120 varieties of Michigan’s finest craft brews will be available for tasting from 4 to 10 p.m. in the big tent on 4th Street in downtown Clare across from the water tower. The entrance will be on the corner of 4th and Beech Streets.
Samples of Michigan craft beers, wine, hard cider and Meade will be featured at the annual event, held each year to raise funds for the Clare community.
Overall the events have raised over $20,000 for the community. The first two years, each event raised about $5,000 for Clare scholarships. The $10,000 raised last year went to purchase Brewster, the new K-9 officer for the Clare Police Department.
Proceeds from the Brewfest this year are earmarked towards funding to provide security systems for Clare Schools.
“We had around 900 people attend last year’s event,” said Chair Bret Cook. “This year we are hoping for 1,000 attendees.”
Cook said tickets for the Brewfest are available on-line at clarebrewfest.com, or they can be purchased at the entrance.
“We have some exceptional entertainment coming this year,” Cook said. Live music will be by Big Ray and the Motor City Kings and by the V’s.
During the Brewfest, the historic Clare Railroad Depot, now settled in its new location, will be open for tours, said Committee Member Diane Lyon.
The Clare Area Chamber of Commerce will get in on the fun this year too. They are sponsoring the first annual “Beer Fun Run(s)” beginning in the morning. A 10K regular run is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and a 5K “Beer Games” run begins at 11 a.m. The starting line will be on Pine Street at the Pere’ Marquette Rail Trail and runners in the 10K race will head east approximately Leaton Road along the rail-trail and head back to finish at the trail’s end at Pine Street. The 5K event will also use the rail-trail, heading east to the public parking area near Zemco’s and back to the starting point. That run will feature a variety of obstacles – Beer games consisting of beer challenges and scores to offset race times.
Runners will each get a “goodie bag” and the first 100 participants will get a t-shirt. Funds raised through the entry fees will go towards the school’s new security systems.
Registration for the Beer Fun Runs will be August 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Stitches for Britches at 118 West Fourth Street and on August 16 at 8 a.m. at the Pere’ Marquette Library at 185 East Fourth Street.
Other sponsors for the Beer Fun Runs are Isabellla Bank, Members First Credit Union, The Evening Post, Cops and Doughnuts, Stitches for Britches, Mercantile Bank and Benchley Chiropractic. Also contributing to the event is the Clare Family Moose #2268.
