Manager Ron Bushong ends a 25-year career with the Clare County Road Commission at the end of July.
“Yes, it is true,” he replied by email. “I have accepted another position and will be working in the private sector beginning Aug. 4.”
Road Commission Chairman Richard Haynak said Bushong “has been doing a wonderful job but he decided he wanted to move on.”
Commissioners have discussed a procedure for hiring a new manager since June. Haynak said the vacancy will be posted online and through the County Road Association of Michigan once a job description is finalized.
“We’re just going over tweaking a job description,” he said.
The department could advertise for either an engineer-manager or a manager-director which does not require a college degree. If the latter is chosen then the department would have to contract for engineering services.
Haynak said he’d like to fill the position by late August.
Bushong has been the manager since 2010, succeeding Steve Stocking who retired.
His first job with the Road Commission was working afternoons washing/greasing trucks in truck maintenance. Later he was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator and became the engineering technician in 2000. He oversaw the local and federal aid road and bridge construction program.
He has an associate degree from Mid Michigan Community College in computer science.
Bushong said, “I have enjoyed working here very much and am very proud of my accomplishments. I wish nothing but the best for the Road Commission Board and staff.”
