Clare Fire Department fought their first house fire of the year Wednesday evening when the more than 100 year old stone farmhouse of Jeff and Cindy Best was totally destroyed at 10776 South Brand Road east of the city.

No one was at home at the time of the fire. Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman said a neighbor discovered the fire shortly after 5 p.m. and called the homeowner, who arrived before the Fire Department and was able to get the family pet and a computer out.

“The house was being renovated,” Chapman said. “We don’t have any idea what caused the blaze, but we know it was not caused by a wood burner.” The family had lived there for about six months he said.

Chapman said no one was injured by the fire. Clare Fire Department was on the scene for about 3 ½ hours, he said. The home burned to the ground.
Clare was assisted at the scene by Surrey Fire Department, Coleman Fire Department and Beaverton Fire Department.
