Clare BOE meets new administrators, music teacher

Three new administrators and a new Primary music teacher were introduced to the Clare Board of Education at Monday’s regular meeting. The board approved all of the four candidates.

Matthew Forsberg is Clare High School’s new principal replacing Ed Hubel, who resigned last spring to take a teaching position in the Middle School.

Forsberg, originally from Clare, comes to the district from Freeland where he was a high school teacher in Industrial Arts, Mathematics, and Project Lead the Way Engineering Teacher at Freeland High School since 2005. He has a Masters in Educational Administration, a Bachelors from CMU with a major in math and a minor in Industrial Education.

New Dean of Students, Instruction and Athletics, Lisa Burns will take the position formerly held by Doug Haggart, who left to take a post as AD and Dean of Students at Sacred Heart Academy in Mt. Pleasant.

Burns has been a teacher at Algonac in Clinton Township for 17 years. She has a Masters of Education – Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley, a BA in Science in Secondary Education from Central Michigan University with a major in Science and a minor in Biology.

New Primary Principal Garth Cornwell comes to Clare from Portland Public Schools where he taught in Middle School and was an Athletic Coach here and also in Alma and Breckenridge. He was an assistant in administration at Portland in 2015-16. He has a Masters of Educational Technology from Grand Valley University, a BA of Arts in Biology and History from Alma College, and a K-12 Admistrative Certification from the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals.

Zachery VanderGraaff will be the Primary School Music Teacher. He comes to Clare from Mt. Pleasant where he taught since 2016. Previously he taught General Music at Lake City. He has a BA in Music Education from Central Michigan University with a major in General Music and a Minor in Elementary Music Education.

All four new administrators have already assumed their duties at Clare Schools.

In another matter, Clare’s Athletic Program was praised by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

In a letter to the Superintendent, John Roberts, Executive Director, and Mark Uyl, Assistant Director said, “The MHSAA would like to congratulate Clare High School for receiving no negative officials’ reports of concern, ejection or sportsmanship during the previous school year. It is a credit to your student athletes, coaches, administration, staff and community for demonstrating such positive sportsmanship throughout the entire school year.”

The Board of Education also approved unanimously one year credit on the step/longevity scale for all unit members of the Clare Education Association (CEA) and for the Clare Pioneer Education Association (CPEA) in the wage opener for their contracts.

Other business at the meeting Monday evening included:
*Approval, after a presentation by Band Director Jason Lowe, of a spring trip and performance in Cleveland for the concert and jazz band students.

*Approval of the Board Policy Update after a second reading.

*Approval of School Handbook changes to the handbooks for high school, middle school, alternative students and adult education students.

*Approval of bills payable for July totaling $103,725.51

*Heard monthly reports from administrators.
