The Clare boys’ cross country team landed second at the 24-3 Regional
on October 29 at host Delta College, qualifying the team for the state
meet for the first time since 2009. The Pioneers tallied 56 points,
with Hemlock winning with 44. Freeland was third with 59 points.
It is the top Regional finish for a Clare boys’ team in at least 10 years.
“We run okay collectively,” said coach Adam Burhans. “With a man
down (Lucas Combs) for much of the season, we were simply going to
have to run our best against a strong Hemlock team. As a result,
they (Hemlock) did what they needed to do to win. Overall, though, I’m
pleased with those who held this team together.”
Earning All-Region honors was Jonathan Harper in 3rd, 16:55; Tanner
Vida in 8th, 17:09; and Hunter Nivison in 11th, 17:19. Setting career PR’s
to round out the top 5 was Jake McFadden in 16th, 17:39; and Kam
Hawley in 18th, 17:49.
“We still believe we have one great race left in us,” said Burhans.
“This has been a solid team, and we really want to finish in the
top 10 at the state meet. Each runner has something he stills
wants to achieve or prove.”
The state meet is slated for Nov. 5 at Michigan International
