Clare came out on top in a momentum filled non-conference boys’ basketball game on Friday, Jan. 3 topping visiting Beal City 69-65.
“Great back-and-forth game,” Clare head coach Rob Wise said. “We were up early and they started to make some shots in the second quarter. We were down 10 points in the third and instead of bagging the game we fought back.”
The Pioneers had a fast start, leading the Aggies 15-4 after the first. Beal City answered however, outscoring Clare 25-18 but Clare still led 33-29 at the half. The Aggies pulled ahead by double digits mid-way through the third but the Pioneers cut the gap to 49-48 by the end of the third.
The Pioneers pulled back ahead in the fourth and hung on for the 69-65 win.
“Several people played big minutes tonight,” Wise said. “Matthew Magnus and Seth Harton didn’t score a lot of points but did the little things that don’t show up in the score book that teams need to win. They were diving for loose balls and playing some nice defense.”
Mason Packard led Clare with 20 points and nine rebounds, Colton Punches hit five three-pointers and finished with 16 points and six boards and Connor Clickner had six points and eight assists.
Clare played at league foe Meridian on Wednesday and hosts another JPC opponent tonight (Friday) with Farwell. The Pioneers also play Monday at Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy.
