Clare couldn’t hang with visiting McBain Northern Michigan Christian on Tuesday, falling to the Comets 5-1 in Northern Michigan Soccer League action.
“Our offense is starting to click,” Clare head coach Doug Helmling said. “We’re doing some of the little things that are starting to work.”
McBain, ranked ninth in division four, led 2-0 at the half, with the Pioneers getting their goal in the second on a header by Camden Dice off an assist by Hunter Seering.
Clare goalkeeper Eric Litke had 19 saves in the game and set the school record for saves in a season in the process.
“That’s good for him but we have to allow less shots,” Helmling said.
On Thursday, Sept. 27 the Pioneers dropped a non-league game 8-0 at Saginaw Nouvel.
The Panthers led 3-0 at the half and put in five second half goals to enforce a mercy.
“We played well in the first half,” Helmling said. “We had an own goal… You can’t take those to heart, you just have to play through those a little bit and do better the next time. Nouvel is a good team, they have a lot of good young talent over there.”
Clare played at Big Rapids on Thursday and hosts Forest Area Oct. 11 to end its regular season.
“We’re looking forward to the next couple weeks,” Helmling said.
