Regulation wasn’t enough for Houghton Lake and Clare in Northern Michigan Soccer League South Division action Tuesday night, as the Bobcats escaped Clare with a 2-1 overtime victory.
Neither team scored in the first 80-minutes, as defense dominated play.
“The Bobcats had a slight edge in shots on goal (15-6),” Clare head coach Doug Helmling said. “The real action was in the middle of the pitch. Both sides were aggressive to the ball and played well defensively.”
Houghton Lake scored the first goal of the game in the first 10-minute overtime, though Clare answered on a goal by Camden Dice to make it 1-1 going into the second extra session.
There the Bobcats scored with seven minutes left to play, and held the Pioneers at bay to steal the win.
Eric Litke made 18 saves in goal for Clare in the loss.
On Thursday, Sept. 26 the Pioneers fell to visiting Alma 3-0 in a non-league meeting.
“We gave Alma a great game,” Helmling said. “There is no quit in this year’s Pioneer team. They know that when they execute at their peak they can match up against anyone.”
Clare (4-10 overall, 2-7 NMSL South) played at Northern Michigan Christian on Thursday hosts Bullock Creek tonight (Friday) and plays in league crossover games on Tuesday and Thursday.
