A 64 year-old Clare man, Daryl Franklin Patterson, died September 17 in a one car accident on East Pickard (M-20) about a half mile west of Shepherd Road in Isabella County’s Chippewa Township.

Police believe the accident may be related to a medical issue.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call around 12:39 a.m. Monday morning, Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said.

He said at 12:38 a.m., Central Dispatch had notified area law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for a car that was heading eastbound on Pickard Rd. near Leaton Road and was swerving all over the road.  Approximately one minute later, Central Dispatch received a call reporting the accident.

Mioduszewski said the 1994 Lexus driven by Patterson, was traveling eastbound and had swerved into the passing lane, made a sharp turn to the right, crossing both of the eastbound lanes of travel and began rotating.  The car left the roadway and entered a ditch.  The car continued traveling eastbound in the ditch and then struck a tree.

Patterson was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident.  An autopsy will be conducted to determine if medical factors may have contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation.

The Isabella Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Tribal Police, Tribal Fire Department, Shepherd Tri-Township Fire Department and Mobile Medical Response Ambulance (MMR).
