After a brief stand-off at a house in Hatton Township, a 42-year old Clare man was arrested November 2 without incident.
Jimmie Jon (Jay) Kaufman was arrested by Deputy Weakman, Trooper LaLone and Trooper D. Hunt.
According to a release from Sgt. Josh Lator of the Michigan State Police, around 6:45 p.m. troopers assisted Clare County deputies with a suspicious vehicle parked at an abandoned home on East Adams Road. Investigating officers discovered a man hiding in one of the rooms of the house.
The release said Kaufman held the officers at bay for several minutes threatening to shoot them. Troopers talked to the man until he let his guard down and they were able to see both hands. Officers could then restrain him without further incident. No weapons were found at the scene.
Officers discovered the man had absconded from the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry. Kaufman was arrested and turned over to the Clare County Sheriff’s Department. One MSP trooper was slightly injured during the arrest, but no medical attention was warranted.
Kaufman was charged with one count of home invasion in the first degree, a felony with a maximum penalty of 20 years and/or $5,000 fine; one count of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer, a felony with a maximum penalty of two years and/or $2,000 fine
