Clare picked up a non-league home win on Friday, Oct. 4, topping Bullock Creek 2-1.
The Pioneers scored just five minutes into the game, getting a goal off the feet of Camden Dice, with an assist by Angel Heras.
Bullock Creek answered with a goal of its own to tie the game at 1-1, though Ryan Whiteman put Clare back up at 2-1 midway through the half.
The second half was scoreless, as the Pioneers hung on for the win.
“Once again a short bench forced (me) to make last minute adjustments and call-ups from (junior varsity) to make available two substitutes,” Clare head coach Doug Helmling said. “By the end of the night’s match that number was reduced to one. The second stanza was a continuation of the first half’s fight for scoring opportunities. Neither team was able to find the back of the net.”
On Thursday, Oct. 3 the Pioneers dropped a road Northern Michigan Soccer League South Division contest to Northern Michigan Christian, 4-0.
“Tuesday’s (Oct. 1) marathon match had lingering effects on (us),” Helmling said. “We faced NMC with three starting players unavailable and several others still aching. Despite the adversity that has become the mantra of this year’ season, we played fast and rugged.”
Clare (5-11) begins district play in Pinconning on Monday with the rest of districts being played in Gladwin on Wednesday and Friday.
