The Clare volleyball team had a strong night in its early season home quad Thursday night. The Lady Pioneers won all of their matches, dropping just one set in their match-ups.

“We served aggressively, were efficient with our hitting and played with a lot of hustle and enthusiasm as a team,” head coach Shannon Zinser said.

Clare topped Kalkaska 25-19 and 25-10, edged Pine River 25-10, 16-25 and 16-14 and topped East Jordan 25-13 and 25-19.

On Saturday the Pioneers played at the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Invitational. The Pioneers started with a loss to Beal City, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-17. After that they beat Marion 25-10, 25-8 and 25-12.

“We played with a lot of hustle and enthusiasm to start the day,” Zinser said. “It was a good start. We then had a really long break waiting for bracket play and didn’t come off of that as well as we would have hoped for.”

Clare’s day ended with a loss to host Sacred Heart in the semi-finals, 25-20, 16-25 and 1512.

“We are working as a team to be better than we were yesterday, every single day,” Zinser said. “The (non-league schedule) is designed for us to play some tough competition and get ready for conference play. We will continue to use these opportunities to stay on track with our goals for the season.”

Clare hosts Sacred Heart on Sept. 4 and opens up Jack Pine Conference play on Sept. 5 when it heads to Beaverton.
