As the 2011 season gets underway for the Farwell Eagles, the theory of every game counts seemed to apply in this matchup. The Farwell Eagles squared off against the Coleman Comets, last years 39-38 victory for Farwell still fresh in both teams minds. As the great start set the tone for Farwell’s eight win playoff run, Coleman fell to 5-4, and fell short of the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Comets weren’t going to let that happen in this event, as a stellar offensive performance put Coleman on top by a score of 46-23.
The game started with the Comets getting the ball, led by Junior Running Back Tim Anderson and Quarterback Trevor Jones. They would drive the ball into the endzone, with Anderson picking up 87 yards on the drive and capping it off with a 5 yard touchdown run. Farwell would fail to respond early, and a bad punt would leave the Coleman Comets in great position to score another. Trevor Jones, working on the start of a three touchdown game, recorded his first by capitalizing on the turnover, and hit Zach Fraser in stride for an early 14-0 lead.
New Farwell starting Quarterback Ben Barnhardt then made his first mistake of the game, throwing an interception to Coleman’s Christian Arzu, eventually leading to another touchdown pass by Jones, and a dominating 20-0 lead. Farwell was not to be outdone however, as Ben Barnhardt led the Eagles down the field and scored on his own, with a three yard touchdown run. The second turned into a scoring fest as Coleman scored twice, and Farwell scored off the legs of Keegan Rhody, with a 44 yard touchdown burst. Going into halftime, the score stood at 32-15 Coleman.
To start the third, Arzu, with a touchdown in the second and an interception already on the stat sheet, ran for his second touchdown, extending the contest to 38-15. The score held until the 4th quarter, when Ben Barnhardt ran for his second 3 yard touchdown. To the chagrin of the Eagles, the Comets would thwart a comeback, as Tim Anderson would score another rushing touchdown, and make the final score, Coleman 46- Farwell 23.
Farwell’s Ben Barnhardt went 7 for 19, 106 yards and an interception. Barnhardt also recorded two rushing touchdowns. Rohdy Keegan led the ground game, with 9 carries, 59 yards, and a touchdown. The Farwell Eagles will take on Fife Lake Forest Area Warriors, Friday September 2. Last year, the Eagles trounced the Warriors 55-18. So it should be another interesting matchup.
