Coleman hosted Royal Oak Shrine Catholic on Thursday, for the program’s first ever meeting.
The visiting Knights got the better end of the deal, as they put up 34 first quarter points to hand the Comets a 41-13 non-conference loss.

“Shrine kicked us in the teeth early and we never recovered,” head coach Chad Klopf said. “I felt we were the better overall team, but Shrine had a few really good athletes and we got run off our on field.  We battled and came up short, we have to fix things and get back at it next week.”

Shrine opened the scoring with a pair of first quarter touchdown passes and added a 34-yard touchdown run before the end of the frame to make it 20-6.

The Comets got on the board midway through the second quarter on a Spencer Pnacek 14-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Schrank to close them within 20-6, though Shrine scored twice in the final two minutes of the half to lead 34-6 at the half. During that stretch, the Knights had a 15-yard touchdown run and also returned a interception to the house from 53 yards away.

Shrine scored again in the third quarter to lead 41-6 with Coleman closing out the scoring late in the fourth on a seven yard keeper by Pnacek. Matthew Federico booted in the ensuing extra point.
Pnacek finished 12-of-21 passing for 135 yards, one touchdown and one interception and he also ran 15 times for 32 yards and a score. Tyler Germain had four catches for 69 yards and Schrank had five grabs for 46 yards and a score.

Pnacek also led the defense with 12 tackles.

Coleman (0-2 overall) opens play in the Mid-State Activities Conference tonight (Friday) when it hosts Merrill (2-0). The Vandals have won a pair of low-scoring games so far this season, including a 12-3 win over Whittemore-Prescott last week. Merrill edged Coleman 20-7 last fall.
