Anthony Robert Schuh, 24, of Harrison, was arrested May 16, around 12:50 p.m. after he allegedly attempted to shoplift indoor copper cable from the Clare Family Farm and Home store.
According to Clare Police Chief Brian Gregory, Store Manager Michael Betz followed Schuh outside when he headed south behind the homes south of the business. Clare County Sheriff’s deputies spotted Schuh running near the Dollar General Store. Betz stopped him and he was arrested.
Betz said, “Without the help of our customers, he would have gotten away. He said a couple of customers went looking for the man with their cars. Betz was helped in apprehending him by another customer Luke Waite, who was working in the trailer park. “He jumped over the fence and came to help, still carrying his shovel,” Betz said. I spotted the guy and told him to lay down, and then realized Mr. Waite was behind me with the shovel.
The stolen wire, valued at about $30, was recovered. Betz said officers found items from Palmer’s Hardware in Farwell in Schuh’s vehicle.
Schuh was arraigned in 80th District Court Tuesday, May 20, by Magistrate Karen Willing. He was charged with two counts of retail fraud in the second degree and with Habitual Offender, 3rd.
Bond was set at $1,000/10 percent. Schuh posted bond and was released. His preliminary exam has been set for June 2.
