Donald Jay Spicer, age 83, passed away in the comfort of his home Friday, April 18, 2014. He was the last surviving son of Floyd and Myrtle Spicer. He was born April 30, 1930 to Floyd Sherman and Myrtle Blanche Spicer, née Wahl. He and his sister Doris were the first twins born in Clare hospital. He was one of 16 children. He met the love of his life, Shirley Mae Dunkle, and married her on July 3, 1964.
Together they had and raised three boys and two girls. He served in Korea from 1951 – 1953 where he received a purple heart as a result of an injury at Triangle Hill. He worked at a variety of jobs throughout his life and retired from the oilfields at age 62. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, being outdoors, playing cards, doing puzzles, repairing small engines, tinkering, and especially spending time with family. Don had a love of life; he enjoyed telling stories that everyone loved to hear, and jokes that made everybody laugh.
Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley; his children, Donald Spicer (Julia Spicer-Torres), Jean (David) Spencer, Kim (Mike) Nutt, David (Wanda) Spicer; his siblings, Doris Zuker, Jan (Ed) Tomaski, Jean (Larry) Bole; his grandchildren, Levi (Lori) Spencer, Nicole Nutt, Helaina Spencer, Crystal Nutt, Rocío Spicer-Torres, Kevin Spicer-Torres, Danté Spicer; his step-grandchildren, Christy (Pete) Brown, John Heileman, Stephanie (Chris) Jaskolski; his great-grandchildren, Aidyn Spencer, Cameron Cutsinger; his step-great-grandchildren, James (Nicole) Brown, Casey Kotrba, Kendall Jaskolski, Reese Jaskolski; and many beloved nieces and nephews, neighborhood kids who knew him as Dad, Uncle Don, or Grandpa Don. He was preceded in death by his son, Carl; his parents and siblings, William Spicer, Edward Spicer, Ray Spicer, Esther Spicer, Helen Spicer, Robert Spicer, Larry Spicer, Dot Gingery, Sue Bole, Jimmy Spicer, Jerry Spicer, and John Spicer.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 2 P.M. at the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Young officiating. Burial will be in the Surrey Twp.
