Ernest R. Burgess, Sr., age 90 of Farwell, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the MidMichigan Medical Center in Clare. Ernest was born the son of Roy and Suzie (Oben) Burgess on November 30, 1920 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He had served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Ernest was united in marriage to Kathleen McDonald on November 14, 1944 with her passing away on October 16, 2004. Ernest had worked as a Welder in the Tool and Die Industry. He had lived in Southgate from 1949 to 1981 when he moved to live on Surrey Lake in Farwell. Ernest loved to fish and tend his garden; he enjoyed playing dice and cards, especially Pinochle and model trains. He belonged to the Lake D.A.V. as well as the Farwell American Legion. Ernest had played in the over 30 softball league in Southgate and had coached youth hockey.
Ernest is survived by his son Mike (Janice) Burgess on Stuart, Florida; his daughters Kathy (Robbie) Bailey and Candy Swanson both of Farwell; a sister Barbara Moore of Florida and 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Ernest is predeceased by his parents; two sons Ernest Jr. and Harry R.; son-in-laws Robie Carroll and Fred Swanson; as well as his brother and sister.
Services for Ernest will take place on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Malson officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 7-9 P.M. and Sunday from 2-5 and 7-9 P.M. Burial will take place in the Surrey Twp. Cemetery in Farwell. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
