May 2nd the Farwell High School Concert Band and many supporters traveled to Big Rapids High School to take part in the MSBOA State Band and Orchestra Festival. Their many hours of preparation and dedication to honing their musical skills paid off.
Farwell High School Band has a long standing tradition of making it to State Band Festival on a regular basis. They have never missed going to State Festival for more than 2 years!
The Band was under the direction of T. Paul Shimmons and student teacher Aaron Wilbert. Mr. Wilbert conducted the band in the opening piece for the program, Peace Jubilee March by Karl King. Then Mr. Shimmons took over to lead the band in playing On A Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss and then they ended the program with And The Fire Raged by Ted Rickets.
After a fine performance on the concert stage for which the audience gave a standing ovation, the band went into the sight-reading room. The sight-reading judge was impressed with the bands ability in that room as were the 3 judges from the performance room.
For their fine performance the Band received the best possible overall rating of a Division One! In fact, all four judges gave them the highest rating! This makes the 2014 Concert Band the first band in the history of Farwell Schools to receive a rating of straight Division One’s across the board from all four judges at both State Band Festival and District Band Festival!
Upon arriving back in Farwell the band students were greeted with a long round of honking cars, by family and friends who were waiting in the parking lot of the high school!
