Farwell businessman dies at the races

7-12-13 OBIT hamilton2Long time Farwell resident, community member and Farwell business owner Michael (Mike) Hamilton, 54, died Saturday evening at the Figure 8 Races in Farwell after an apparent heart attack.

Hamilton owned and operated Hamilton’s Garage in Farwell since 1991. He worked with the Farwell Labor Day Committee and the Pere’ Marquette Snowmobile Club, but car racing was his passion, family members said. He had raced Figure 8 derby cars for over 25 years and was the winner of the State Figure 8 Championship in 1999.

His wife Gina (Garant) Hamilton is a member of the Farwell Village Council and Program Director at Surrey Township Library. The couple have two married sons and two grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, mother, four sisters and three brothers, his grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Services were held Wednesday at the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home with burial in the Surrey Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Surrey Township Fire Department in his name.
