The Village of Farwell is looking at developing a Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

Kathy Methner, of Middle Michigan Development Corporation was at the October 6 meeting to outline some of the benefits of a DDA and offer her assistance with the procedure needed.

She said the Village would have to set up a eight to nine member board, and develop boundaries for the proposed district.

She said the development of a DDA would make the Village eligible for a variety of grants for improvements and new businesses in the district. “There are Community Development Block Grant out there for downtown development, but a DDA is required to apply for those grants,” she said.

The Village Council members said they will look into the matter. Methner also said the Planning Commission could serve as the DDA.

In another matter the Council approved the consent agenda: motions developed during the Committee of the Whole meeting in September. With a single motion, board members approved:

*A $1,135 estimate from Johnson Door and Central Vac Systems Inc. for replacement of the DPW Pole Barn Door bottom section; two multi-code radio receivers; and 10 multi-code remotes installed.

*A $2,600 bid from H20 Towers to power wash the Village water tower.

*Changing the Health Insurance Opt-Out amount from $474 per month to $250 a month for full time employees who choose to opt out of the health insurance.

*Two new line items – $200 for Mileage Zoning and $200 for Training Zoning.

*A resolution authorizing changes in the lighting service by Consumers Energy.

During the regular meeting the Council also approved the purchase of tires for the John Deere Tractor from Bob’s Tire for $576 and approved bills for September totaling $41,357.56.
