The Farwell football team started the 2012 campaign 2-0 with wins over Coleman and Marion in its first two weeks. From there, the Eagles struggled, dropping all seven of its Jack Pine Conference games to finish 2-7.

Second year head coach Alan Esterline hopes that despite his team’s lack of numbers they can make noise in the JPC this year.
“We have a small team so it’s tough to be able to scrimmage so a lot is really up in the air,” Esterline said. “Our scrimmage is going to show a lot for us. That’s going to allow us to take a look at it and see where we’re at.”

Returning to the team are seniors Ryan Simmons (offensive line, JPC honorable mention, linebacker), Seth Baginski (JPC second team cornerback, wing back), Jacob Sutton (wide receiver, safety, kicker, punter), Riley Skornicka (center), Devin Warner (offensive tackle, defensive end),Dustin Weber (offensive guard, linebacker), Cody Sinks (defensive back) and junior Noah Wilson (JPC honorable mention running back, linebacker).

New to the team are seniors Jacob Eigner (defensive tackle), Walter Mosby (wide receiver), Dylan Brown (safety), Curtis Robinson (wide receiver), juniors Cody Gordon (defensive back), Ethan Moore (defensive tackle), Allen Moore (defensive tackle), Allen Moore (defensive tackle), Deric Szafranski (running back, linebacker), Branden Turner (quarterback, linebacker), Brandon DeGeer (defensive end, tight end), Trent Johns (offensive guard) and sophomore Shane Wiley (tight end, defensive end).

“We need Simmons, Wilson and Baginski (to step up),” Esterline said. “Newcomers that we need to step up would be Johns, Mosby and Brown. I feel we have a great group of athletes that are working extremely hard. We will show up each week and play as hard as we possibly can. We want to get Farwell football back in the playoffs.”

The Eagles open their season Aug. 29 at Coleman. Farwell topped the Comets, who went 4-5 last year, 61-54.

“They had a sophomore quarterback last year and he threw the ball well,” Esterline said. “I’m making the assumption he’s going to be slinging the ball well again this year. We’re going to have to play awful well in the defensive backfield and be able to cover the pass.”
