Needing to take one more set to earn the win in Wednesday night’s non-conference volleyball match in Farwell, the Lady Eagles got a dominating performance by seniors Lauren Ringwalt and Caron White to top visiting Shepherd 25-23, 25-18 and 25-15.

“That was huge for us, to be able to ride her for a little bit and watch her pound balls,” Farwell head coach Jacob Sullivan said. “Ringwalt is making smart decisions at setter and is putting the ball where we need it. She kept feeding the ball to White tonight.”

White had seven kills in the third set, including a string of four hard spikes in the middle of the set, all of which were set up to near perfection by Ringwalt.

White’s four straight kills put Farwell up 9-3 in the set, White later added an ace to make it 13-4 and then polished off the night with a tip-kill for the final point of the night.

“Overall, it was a good night,” Sullivan said. We have been working on playing with high intensity throughout the game,” Sullivan said. “We had a few lapses tonight but when we are playing with high intensity and focus it is pretty hard to stop us.”

The first set back-and-forth early on, with the Eagles taking a 15-12 lead on a side-out. From there, Kendra Robison rattled off four straight aces to put Farwell up 19-12, though Shepherd responded to tie the game at 21-all later in the set.

After trading points with Shepherd, the Eagles took a 24-22 lead on a net-foul and won the first set 25-22 when the Blue Jays were unable to handle a free-ball cleanly.

Farwell took a 9-3 lead early in the third set on a White tip-kill, but a series of attack errors by both teams led the Eagle lead to shrink to 14-12.

A sideout put Farwell up 15-12, followed by an ace by Robison that made it 16-12. The Eagles continued their streak to take a 19-12 lead on a Kate Saupe spike.

A few points later, Dani Hanna served an ace to put Farwell up 23-16, Ringwalt had a tip-kill that made it 24-17, with both teams trading serve errors to give Farwell the set at 25-18.

White led Farwell with 12 kills, three blocks and four digs, Ringwalt had 13 assists and five digs, Saupe had eight digs and served for nine points, Robsion served 11 points and five aces and Hanna served for 16 points and added two aces.

“This is a group of girls that have played together before,” Sullivan said. “They’re a close group and they want to make a difference. They know that they haven’t played up to their potential the last couple years.”

On Aug. 27 Farwell topped host Evart in another non-conference match, winning in five sets 25-19, 13-25, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-12.
“We started off strong but lost focus in the second set and start of the third,” Sullivan said. “At the end of the third set the girls made up their mind that they were not going to walk away losers and started to score points and made the third set a close set. They used that momentum to take them through the fourth and fifth sets to be able to take the win. We didn’t play to our full potential but definitely showed that we are not going to give up on any game and we are going to battle through anything to continue to try and win.”

Caron White led the team in kills with 12, and also went nine-of-11 serving for three points, Lauren Ringwalt had three kills, 20 assists and was 14-of-15 serving for 10 points and one ace, Kendra Robison had two kills, two blocks and was 21-of-25 serving with 16 points and five aces, Kate Saupe was 18-of-21 serving with 12 points and three aces and Becca Howard was 16-of-17 serving for 10 points.

Farwell (4-3-1) plays at Montabella on Saturday, plays at John Glenn on Monday and hosts Clare in its Jack Pine Conference opener on Wednesday.
