The Clare community is mourning after a freak accident Monday afternoon took the life of a rural Clare child.

Around 4 p.m. May 26, Clare County Deputies were called to a home in the 10,000 block of Tobacco Drive in Sheridan Township after a father accidently ran over his daughter while backing his vehicle up.

Undersheriff Dwayne Miedzianowski reported that Christopher Ackerman, 38, of Clare, was backing up his truck and didn’t see anyone behind him when he hit his three-year-old daughter Sydney, who was on her tricycle behind the vehicle.

The youngster died due to her injuries.

Sydney’s funeral has been scheduled for Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Clare at 11 a.m. She is survived by her parents Christopher and Carol, a brother Zachary and grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Burial will be in Cherry Grove Cemetery.

Miedzianowski said this is the second or third accident of this type in the past two years.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service and the Clare Fire Department.

Sheriff John Wilson said he wishes to express his condolences to the family for their loss. Condolence messages may be left for the family on the Ackerman family’s tribute wall at
