Fire damages Farwell business

Tuesday night’s fire caused extensive smoke and water damage at Deb and Jesse’s Downhome Diner in Farwell.

Surrey Township Fire Chief Dave Williams said the diner had closed early – around 6 p.m. Tuesday evening due to the weather. “We got the call around 7:30 p.m.,” he said, “when a passerby noticed smoke coming from the building and called the fire department.”

The business is owned by Deb and Jesse Pacheco. No one was in the building at the time of the fire.

Surrey Firefighters, assisted by firemen and equipment from the Clare Fire Department had extinguished the blaze “in about 30 minutes,” Williams said. Firefighters were on the scene until midnight however getting water out of the basement, where they believe the fire may have started. “It may have been caused by an electrical problem,” Williams said, “but the cause is still under investigation.”

He said there was smoke and heat damage throughout the business and fire damage to about 20 percent of the building, mainly to the basement floor and some equipment downstairs.

No injuries were reported.
