The Clare Fire Department was called to the home of Sondra Marie Carpenter around 9:46 p.m. November 2.
When firefighters arrived at the home at 206 Hillcrest Street, flames and smoke could be seen coming from inside the building.
“Everyone was able to escape the home,” Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman said. “No one was injured, but there was heavy smoke and water damage to the home.
Chapman said Carpenter, who lived there with several children, was in the process of purchasing the home. He said he wasn’t sure how many family members were in the home when the fire started.
Thirteen Clare firemen were assisted at the scene by members of the Surrey Fire Department, Clare Police, Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service and the American Red Cross.
He said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but they believe it started in the ceiling of the kitchen and may have been caused by an electrical problem. “The fire spread throughout the building, which is believed to be a total loss. It burned through the roof,” Chapman said.
Firefighters were on the scene until 1:06 a.m. Sunday morning.
