A vehicle fire on Clare’s 5th Street at the intersection of McEwan blocked downtown traffic Tuesday afternoon.
Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman reported that a 2006 Ford belonging to Tiphani Goul of Clare caught fire around 3:52 p.m. October 1st when Goul stopped for the traffic light.
Firefighters arrived at the scene within five minutes, Chapman said, and were able to extinguish the fire quickly. They were on the scene for only about 20 minutes.
Goul, another adult and two children were in the vehicle at the time of the fire, but were all able to escape unharmed.
Chapman said the fire was confined to the engine compartment, but he believed the vehicle was a total loss. He said the cause may have been electrical issues.
A wrecker was near the incident and blocked traffic while firefighters extinguished the blaze, then towed the vehicle away afterwards.
Chapman said because the fire was in the middle of 5th Street, some of the Clare firefighters had to drive around the blaze to reach the fire station and respond to the call.
