Fireworks & fun highlight the holiday

Visitors and residents alike have a wide variety of fun things to do around the area for the next two weekends and holiday fireworks to ooh and aah over in Clare, Farwell and Harrison.

If you are looking for something different, have you ever flown in 1929 biplane?  Here’s your chance for a truly unique experience. Sunday, as part of the list of Summerfest events in Clare, biplane rides in a vintage flying circus aeroplane will be available at the Clare Municipal Airport.

Up to four can ride in the open cockpit biplane which will feature gentle maneuvers in the open air by Waldo Wright’s Flying Service. The event, reliving the golden age of aviation, is sponsored by AeroShell. For more information and costs contact waldowrights.com.

The 28th annual Summerfest celebration will be held June 26 through June 28 in Clare this year with the majority of events scheduled for this Friday, June 27.

The annual city-wide garage sales are already ongoing with sales a complete list of sites available at the Clare Chamber office.

Friday activities at Shamrock Park are scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. with a Children’s Activity Center loaded with crafts and games will be held at Mid Michigan Community Action Agency from 6 to 9 p.m.

A long-time tradition at the park will be Witbeck’s free picnic, which begins at 6 p.m.; a Photo Booth Sponsored by Members First Credit union is set for 6 to 9 p.m.; the famous annual Teddy Bear Races sponsored by Maury Irwin of State Farm will start at 6 p.m.; a Gospel Concert is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. and the Gateway Community Band Concert will start at 8 p.m.

Something new this year will be the “Chicken Poo Bingo event.

The evening will wind up at 10 p.m. (or dusk) with the annual huge fireworks display over Shamrock Lake.

On Sunday, July 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., there will be a Pancake Fly-In Breakfast at the Clare Municipal Airport. Spectators are welcome.

Summerfest sponsors include Cops & Doughnuts, Clare Automotive, Chemical Bank, Jay’s Sporting Goods, Kyle’s Mfg. Co, Firstbank, A & E Rentals, Ace Hardware, Jam and Judy Brankel, Buccilli’s Pizza, Clare Hardware, Clare Kiwanis, Zemko’s, Travis Harrison, Johnston’s Elevator, McDonald’s Auto, Austin and Austin, Gateway Pharmacy, Gateway Lanes and Ruby’s Trailer Park.

On Saturday, June 28th beginning at 10 a.m., Mid Michigan Community College is hosting its fifth annual Sweat Shaker Mountain Bike Race on the Harrison campus bike trails.

The Sweat Shaker has been newly added to the Michigan Mountain Biking Association Championship Point Series and a large turnout of racers is expected. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Laker’s athletic program. The race is open to all riders and has multiple classes and divisions. Online registration ends today, June 27th but riders can also register on the day of the event. To register on-line visit midmich.edu/sweatshaker.

Holiday events will continue Monday, June 30 with a Kid’s Movie Night complete with ice cream.

And, for all the Wild West fans out there, another special event is planned for Friday, July 4 at the Clare City Park. Watch as the Lone Ranger, John Wayne and other famous cowboys bring “robbers” to justice all day long.

There will be a free reigning demonstration by Rob Petree and Farrah on Fourth Street by the Depot at 10 a.m. and a Buckaroo Contest at the City Park at 11 a.m. with youngsters winning prizes for their cowboy and cowgirl costumes in three divisions – ages 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9 years old. One winner from each group will be chosen.

At 4:30 p.m., the Clare county Mounted police will put on a crowd control demonstration and the Minor Diner will have cowboy fare available in the park. The July 4th Wild West Day is sponsored by  Ruckle’s Pier, Clare Automotive, Capital Equipment, Johnston Elevator and Family Farm and Home.

Harrison events for the holiday include a Bump & Run Derby by Unique Motor Sports at the Clare County Fairgrounds on July 3rd at 7 p.m. followed by fireworks at dusk.

The annual Harrison July 4th Parade begins at 11 a.m. at the fairgrounds with line up at 9:30 a.m.

In Farwell, Holiday events at the Farwell Fairgrounds will happen on July 5th and include the annual Figure 8 Derby at 7:30 p.m. followed by a fireworks display at dusk.
