A snowstorm that began Wednesday afternoon and continued into the evening dropped a couple of inches of heavy, wet snow on Clare County and caused power outages all over the area with the most in the southern third of the county where the fall leaves have not come off the trees yet.

Clare Emergency Management Director Jerry Becker said Thursday morning that “Last night approximately 2,400 homes, located mainly around Clare and Farwell lost power when limbs came down on power lines.” By Thursday morning he said all but 618 had their power restored. “They expect to restore the rest by 12:15 p.m.,” he said in an interview Thursday morning.

Thursday morning the Consumers Energy power outage map showed several areas where the power remained out including an area along M61 west of Harrison near Harrison Avenue; two larger areas west of Farwell  along West Ludington and another encompassing Lydell, West Maple Grove, Bringold, Hemlock and Washington Roads  and several isolated areas in Surrey, Grant, Sheridan Hatton and Lincoln Townships, with the most outlined along Surrey Road near Otter Lake and on Harrison Avenue  south of the freeway.

Becker wanted to remind people that the area senior centers in Clare at the Clare Castle, in Harrison at the former Knights of Columbus on Broad Street and in Farwell at the Senior Center across from the library are always open for those who have lost power, heat or need a place to go. “They won’t turn anyone away,” he said.
