Four win American Legion best Chili

October 31, 2014

The American Legion Post 558 in Farwell was the site of the 2nd Annual Chili Cook-off this past October 25.  This event was coordinated with the Michigan vs. Michigan State football game.  The Post was jammed packed with chili tasters and football fans.  There were 15 world class Chili entries — and only one was too hot to eat!

The Chili categories were judged by returning Afghanistan Veterans Kevin McDevitt (on the left) and Al Broene (on the right).  The judges awarded the Best Michigan Chili to Kim Hughes of Lansing and the Best Michigan State chili to Vickie Cooper of Farwell.  The award for the Best Chili Name went to Ray Martin for his “Rootin’ Tootin’ Buck Fever” chili.  The First Place Winner as determined by a “people’s choice” vote went to Jan Penton of Lake George.  Last year’s defending champion, Colleen Crisp, was too ill to enter her splendid offering.

The Chili Cook-off raised $250 toward the purchase of Christmas gifts for local veterans confined in the area’s extended care facilities.
