In partnership with the McLaren Central Michigan Free Clinic, the Central Michigan District Health Department (CMDHD) was named a winner of the Michigan Department of Community Health 2012 Director’s Award for Excellence in Local Public Health. The award was presented on October 3, 2012 during the Michigan Premier Public Health Conference in Big Rapids, Michigan to reward local public health departments for supporting public health programs.
The Free Clinic was opened in January 2012 to help meet the needs and improve access to health care services for those who are low-income, uninsured people living in Isabella County. The Free Clinic is held each week at the health department in Mt. Pleasant, and it offers primary care services given by doctors and nurses. Many patients who have visited the Free Clinic are now on medication and are taking care of conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, and back pain. People with more serious conditions are referred to specialty doctors who are willing to give free care or at a reduced cost. The staff and volunteers at the Free Clinic work with patients to help them find specialty doctors and to schedule lab work or x-rays when needed.
Although the Free Clinic is not run by CMDHD, there is a strong partnership between them. The staff members from the Free Clinic and CMDHD meet each month to make sure the clinic is running well. Additionally, patients of the Free Clinic are often referred to CMDHD programs such as Smoking Cessation Classes, HIV/AIDS Testing, Family Planning, Immunizations, and the Michigan Community Dental Clinic, which is also located at CMDHD.
If you or someone you know is in need of health care services, please tell them about the Free Clinic. The person must be a low-income, uninsured person that has been living in Isabella County for least 7 months. The clinic is every Thursday with check-in from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM. It is located in the Central Michigan District Health Department at 2012 E. Preston, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858.
