7-26-13Dougie StrotherDougie Strother is a nine-year-old boy from Harrison. When he was two years old he became very ill and was taken to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with Type I or Juvenile Diabetes and spent four days in the ICU.

In the beginning, Dougie had to endure four insulin injections every day, frequent blood glucose checks and adhere to a very structured meal plan. Within a year, Dougie’s mom advocated for him to obtain an insulin pump and was successful. The insulin pump that Dougie has had for the last six years has drastically improved his quality of life.

Dougie is now a healthy, thriving young man who enjoys all of the activities that other children do. It is the advancement of modern medical knowledge and technology such as blood glucose meters and insulin pumps that have made this possible. Organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) dedicate their work to making such educational and technological advancements. Finding a cure for Type I (Juvenile) Diabetes is the ultimate goal.

Dougie and his family want to contribute to the cause by helping others become more aware of the effects of Juvenile Diabetes on patients and families as well as inform them of the organizations out there that are striving to improve the lives of patients and find a cure. They are hosting a fundraising event this weekend on Saturday, July 27th at Scooter’s Airport Bar in Harrison. At 5 p.m. live music will be provided by many local musicians, such as local radio personality CC Singer who will be offering a pre-release for his original single. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of Dougie Strother.
