Holiday travelers fueling up in Clare will get a few more miles for their dollars, but no one seems to know exactly why Clare, lately, is one of the best places in Michigan to buy gas.
It is a real mystery.

Calls to a couple of local stations got the same answer, “I have no idea.” Even Jennie Bigalow, District Manager for Marathon in Mt. Pleasant, said the prices are set by the corporate office in Virginia and that she doesn’t know how they are determined.

An email to Virginia Monday got no response to the question, but Clare drivers aren’t complaining.
For the past week or so, the already low price (compared to communities around Clare) has been steadily dropping. Wednesday’s prices were $1.629 at the Admiral station on McEwan and the Next Door Food Store’s Marathon pumps, two cents cheaper than just the day before.

11-27-15 Gas price Tuesday at AdmiralThe lowest prices Wednesday were $1.59 at both Witbeck’s and the Marathon Station by Little Caesars on McEwan.

Compare that to the $1.989 cost in Mt. Pleasant and the Harrison low of $1.819 around 3 p.m. Monday and a high of $1.899 Monday morning.

That’s a big change from years past when the prices always seemed to be a little higher in this little community in the center of the State.

As of Sunday, there were nine regular gas price reports in the previous five days in Clare. The average Regular gas price in Clare last weekend was $1.71, which was $0.38 lower than U.S. national average’s regular gas price of $2.09.

A Monday report said the price of gas was below $2 per gallon in forty-one States and the National average was down even more – to $2.072. It had risen slightly later Monday to an average of $2.074.
Compare that to the highest average price recorded in Michigan just seven years ago when it was a whopping $4.869 per gallon.

Investigation of this reporter’s family record of gas prices paid out showed that this is the lowest a gallon of gas has cost in Clare since January 2, 2009 when it was down to $1.649 per gallon. Exactly one year later it was $2.699 and the following year, 2011, it was $3.199 on January 2. The price on January 3, 2012 was 3.429 but it came back down slightly by January 5, 2013 to $3.239 and just last year on January 5 it was $3.319. Those records show that the price began dropping below the $3 mark (with one October exception) at the beginning of November.

Does this mean we will continue to see these low, low prices through the beginning of the 2016 New Year? Nobody knows for sure.

It could be on the rise again or even lower by the time this edition of the Review hits the newsstands.
