Gerald K. Shilling

Gerald K. Shilling, age 83, of Lake, Michigan, passed away at his home on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, surrounded by his family.  He was born the son of A. Tom and Sarah “Margeurite”( Martin) Shilling on June 6, 1935 in Lake.  Gerald married Kay Merritt in 1954, later divorced, and re-married in 10-5-18 OBIT Shilling1989.  She preceded him in death on Dec. 17, 2016.  He had been a Class A Steel Fitter with American Hoist and Derrick and had also been a millwright supervisor for General Motors prior to retirement.  He had served in the US Marine Corps from 1958 to 1960.  Gerald was a lifelong resident of the Lake area and was very Civic minded.  He had served as the Commander of the Am Vets Farwell Post 1020, had been Past-Master of the Corning F&A Masonic Lodge #335 of Farwell, was a member of the Elf Khruafeh Shrine in Clio, Mich., and the Scottish Rite Bay City Consistory of Masons.  He also served as Past- President of the “Lake Daze” Celebration in Lake, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Gerald is survived by his children, Gerald K. Shilling Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mi. and Debra Menne (Jermanie Brewington) of Raeford, N.C., his grandchildren, Tanya Shilling, Robert Menne Jr., and Anthony Menne(Natasha Marchant), and two brothers, Arnold(Geraldine) of Lake and Ronald(Barbara) of McMillin, Michigan.  He was preceded in death by Kay, two infant children, Harold and Helen, and his brother Duane.

Masonic Rites and a Funeral will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 1:00 PM at the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Garfield Township Cemetery in Lake.  Friends are invited to meet with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until the time of services at 1:00 PM.  Memorial donations in lieu of flowers have been suggested to the American Cancer Society.  If you are unable to attend, you are invited to leave his family an online condolence message on Gerald’s tribute page at
