July 14, 2012

A 25-year-old Grayling man drowned in a tubing accident at Lake George Saturday, July 7.

Robert Howe was tubing with another family member behind a 2009 Crest pontoon boat when he drowned after falling off the tube. Both tubers fell off the tubes. Neither of the tubers were wearing a life vest, investigators found. The other tuber was not harmed, Deputies said.

The accident was reported around 3:37 p.m. Central Dispatch said they received multiple 911 calls that the man had “gone missing” under the water in the middle of the Lincoln Township lake.

Responding Emergency Crew members and several civilian bystanders aided in the search, locating him in about 15 feet of water. He was pulled from the water, and CPR started. He was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center-Clare where he was pronounced dead.

The accident is still under investigation by the Clare County Sheriff’s Department. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Sheriff’s Department Marine Division, the Department of Natural Resources, Lincoln Fire/Rescue and Mobil Medical Response Ambulance Service.
