The Mid Michigan Heat had a good weekend at the ASA State Tournament in Mt. Pleasant.  The Heat went 1-1 in pool play with a win against Moran Iron Works and a loss against the eventual state champion Michigan Hawks.  That put the Heat 2nd in their pool which led to wins in bracket play against the  Swat, and Firestix.

Heading into Sunday with no losses in bracket play the weekend ended in disappointment when weather and tournament rule changes to single elimination bracket play ended the Heat’s run early.  The loss to Turning 2 left the Heat as the 4th place team out of 20 teams.  However, this qualified them for Nationals in La Plata, Maryland.

Over the 4th of July weekend the Heat competed in the Mt. Pleasant fast pitch eight team tournament.  The Heat dominated the field winning all six of their games.  During pool play Heat beat Line Drive 9-1, Shepherd 3-2, Mt. Pleasant Fastpitch 16-0, and the Driller’s 9-0 putting them first in their pool.

On Sunday in the semi-finals the Heat beat the Muth Mavericks 10-1.  In the finals the Heat faced the MBS Jets.  In previous play the Heat and Jets split on the year.  The game was 0-0 going into the top of the 6th inning when the Heat broke it open with a 5 run inning.

Gabby Airbets got the bats going with a triple.  Suthern Schuler, Jade Berthume, Hallie Reed, and Zoe Merillat all had consecutive singles to tear the game open.  Olivia Raymond had a huge double to finish the scoring leaving the score 5-0 after 6-1/2.  The Heat added an insurance run in the top of the 7th finishing the game with 6 runs.

The Jets had the top of their line-up coming to bat in the bottom of the 7th.  They started the inning with 3 singles scoring two runs but then a strikeout, pop out and ground out ended the threat.  The Heat won the championship with a 6-2 win over the Jets.  On the weekend the Heat pitching staff of Hallie Reed, Suthern Schuler, and Jade Berthume was lights out.  In six games the pitching staff combined for 39 total strike outs.  That combined with excellent defense allowed only 6 runs to cross the plate all weekend.
