They got outscored by six points in the second half, but the Harrison Lady Hornet basketball team hung on for their second Jack Pine Conference win Tuesday night, topping visiting Houghton Lake 33-27.
Harrison led 9-2 after the first quarter and pushed its lead to 20-2 before, the Lady Bobcats scored the final six points of the half to make it 20-8 at the half.
“We started out solid in the first quarter and held them to two points,” Harrison head coach Kelly Cook said. “We took selective shots and rebounded well. (Our lead shrank) by slacking off on our defense.”
The Lady Bobcats outscored Harrison 6-5 in a low-scoring third quarter and cut the Hornet lead down to three in the fourth quarter before Harrison extended its lead back to nine late in the game.
“Our girls did a wonderful job by responding to this pressure,” Cook said. “It’s great to watch the confidence build in your team and we are doing that right now. We look forward to this second round of play in the conference.”
Brooke Colville led Harrison with six points, Olivia Sharp, Allison Lipovsky and Hillary Brewer all had five points with Lipovsky adding 12 rebounds and Brewer adding 11 boards. Katelynn Sherrick had four points, four steals and four assists and Brandi Powell and Erika Heckman both had four points.
Harrison (4-6 overall, 2-4 JPC) played at Beaverton on Thursday and play at Roscommon on Thursday, Jan. 24.
