The Harrison ski teams competed at Caberfae Peaks in the Cadillac Invitational on Thursday, Jan. 23, where the boys’ team came in fourth while the girls’ came in eighth in the nine team event.
“Once again, our boys team did very well,” Harrison head coach Linda Coon said.
In the giant slalom Justin Wilson took 13th, Josh Wilson took 15th, James Gillespie was 23rd, Petr Horak was 25th, Jake Jackson was 26th and Cody Chambers was 38th in a race that had nine teams and 45 racers.
In slalom, Josh Wilson won a medal by coming in seventh place and Justin Wilson was eighth to grab a medal as well.
“The two seem to go back and forth every meet and are in great competition with each other,” Coon said.
Jackson was 22nd, Horak took 27th and Chambers was 36th.
“Chambers is doing a great job,” Coon said. “This is his first year skiing and he improves with each ski meet.”
The Lady Hornets had just three healthy skiiers, as the squad recently lost two athletes to injury.
“My girls are doing a great job keeping their heads up and working very hard,” Coon said. “They overcame a huge obstacle this week as they lost two teammates due to injuries. With only three girls left that meant that they couldn’t race as you need four racers to form a team. The girls worked very hard trying to recruit someone the night before just so they could race. They were able to come up with two girls… Neither has had any practice nor have skied at all this year but with their help (we) came in eighth place. I say that’s not bad.”
In slalom Brianna Norton was 23rd, Anaca Boulton was 31st, Lexus Weldon was 35th and Kotone Kiyuna was 39th out of 47 racers.
In giant slalom Boulton was 35th, Weldon was 43rd, Kiyuna was 44th, Norton was 45th and Jessica Claffey was 46th.
Harrison continues its season today (Friday) at Apple Mountain in an Alpine Ski Conference make-up event. They compete again at the Benzie Invitational Feb. 3.
