The ninth annual Paula Pernstill Health Fair in Farwell attracted hundreds to the free wellness event for the whole family, which included free venders offering a wide assortment of venders for adults as well as a whole series of events and games for children.

More than ninety booths filled the Farwell High School gym and Jaime Center,  all geared towards a healthier body and mind for the community with free cholesterol, hearing and blood pressure checks, massages, information about medical supplies, treatment options, and more.

The children’s fair, titled “Get into the Groove,” was held in the old gym and had a variety of events geared especially for the youngsters including the “Lion’s Hearing Lab” just for kids and a special dental cleaning, tooth coating and referrals by “Smiles on Wheels.”

The whole family events included the return of the “Smoke House” to educate both adults and children on safe ways to escape a burning building and tours of the “LifeNet” helicopter from Saginaw. The Surrey Fire Department’s Smoke House was also a feature during the event.

“The whole idea of the Health and Safety Fair is to get information to people who otherwise may not have access to it,” said event founder Tom Pernstill.

He said 450 enjoyed the free lunch and between 600 and 800 attended Saturday’s event. “All our responses were extremely positive,” he said, “everyone said it was the best fair ever!”

“I just want to thank all our sponsors, volunteers and everyone who attended,” he added. “It’s nice to have a community like Farwell that helps so many people.”

Pernstill and his wife Paula started the first Health and Safety Fair in 2004. Paula, who was battling ovarian cancer at the time, has since died, but Tom has continued to promote the event in her name, with help from the whole community, since that time.
