It’s Christmas time in the County

Christmas events are coming up this weekend and next weekend all over Clare County. Nearly every community has something special planned in the next week or so.

The fun begins today, Friday, November 30th with Festival of Trees presented by the Clare Conservation District from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, December 1st from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Festival will be located at Jay’s Sporting Goods in the Outback Room and will feature vendors, door prizes, a silent auction, decorated table trees and more.
Saturday events this week include Christmas with the Alpacas at Living the Good Life Alpaca Acres on Bringold Avenue west of Harrison (810-877-4103) from 1 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, December 1st.

Camp Rotary, just north of Clare at 3201 South Clare Avenue will be serving Pancakes with Santa on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is open to the public, and is geared towards families with young children. Enjoy a hot breakfast and have your picture taken with Santa! Cost for the event is just $8 and children age 3 and under are free.

The Farwell Farmers Market is hosting a Holiday Bazaar this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farmers Market Building on the corner of Illinois and Hall Streets. Shoppers will find loads of great ideas there for Christmas. Call the Village office for more information or to register. 989-588-9926.

Saturday is also the Big Holiday Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the United Methodist Women at the United Methodist Church across from the Farwell Elementary. The event will feature Christmas decorations, a bake sale, lunch and “Grandma’s Attic.”

It will be a busy day for Santa. He will be visiting the Farwell High School Saturday, December 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. for the annual Santa Visit and Bake Sale. Events will include his visit sponsored by the Farwell Area Women’s Club include Face Painting and a Kids Make and Take craft sponsored by the Surrey Township Library.

From December 5th through December 15th there will be a Clare Christmas Light Contest sponsored by Mid Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters. Nominate your favorite Christmas Light Display (for a $20 fee) and vote at merchants around town. Nominations can be made by visiting the BB/BS Facebook page (buy a ticket) or pay at any of the four places to vote: Cops and Doughnuts, Timeout Tavern, The Clare Chamber and the Doherty Hotel.

Lots more is taking place on Saturday December 8th around the area.

When it comes to celebrating the Christmas season in a big way, the small city of Clare has a big event planned for the day.

The fun begins with the Clare County Arts Council Craft Show in the Clare Castle from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then Santa Claus will arrive downtown on a firetruck from the Clare Municipal Airport. There will be Treats and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Clare Depot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where kids can visit with Santa and enjoy hot cocoa and donut holes provided by Cops and Doughnuts. Santa is sponsored by Buccilli’s Pizza of Clare and the Newman School of Dance.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the “Frozen Theme,” youngsters will have a chance to visit with Elsa at the Heart of Michigan Café. And, shoppers can buy dome delicious cookies at the 515 Gallery on McEwan Street during the Emerald Isle Complex Cookie Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Clare Hardware will also feature a 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. S’Mores Treat Station and from 10 a.m. to noon SUN (Some Ukulele Nuts) will be making music at Cops and Doughnuts-Clare City Bakery.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees can celebrate a Vintage Christmas at the Vintage Rose on the corner of East Fourth and Pine Streets.

Santa’s Reindeer will be visiting at the Depot from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Their visit is sponsored by Edward Jones – Justin Cole and the Clare County Arts Council.

Between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. a Flash Mob from the Newman School of Dance will be performing on 4th Street in front of the Clare Castle.

Carriage Rides, sponsored by RB Harsh Construction will tour the City from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can hop on board at the Depot.

Next door to the Depot, Cookie Decorating will be going on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at JT Bakers on West 4th Street.

From noon to 2 p.m. the Clare Jaycees will be sponsoring the Winter Cook Off at the Evening Post Bar and Grill on Fourth Street. Dishes can consist of anything hot and served in a bowl.

At 2 p.m. an Interactive Christmas Movie will be held at the Pere Marquette District Library with Free Popcorn.

Kids can visit with Mrs. Claus at Cops and Doughnuts-Clare City Bakery from 2 to 4 p.m.

Christmas in Downtown Clare winds up with an art show – Artist Miniatures at the 515 Gallery on McEwan Street where more than 50 artists will be displayed from 6 to 8 p.m. for a silent auction (starting bids of $40) with the profits to benefit the Clare Area Backpack Project.

Harrison’s Christmas Celebration is also set for Saturday, December 8th from 6 to 8 p.m. in two locations: the Harrison City Market on M-61 and Hillside Elementary School.

The Harrison City Market event will feature a Christmas Tree Walk through a grove of decorated trees. Relax, take photos, and enjoy coffee, cider and cookies.

The event is free and the decorated trees will be donated to local organizations to give to families in need after the event. There will also be vendors at the Market.
Crafts will include pinecone bird feeders and coloring pages.

Events at Hillside Elementary School will include a special Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Tree Lighting will take place in front of the School. After the Tree Lighting, there will be a special Christmas Celebration with cider and cookies, an appearance and book reading by Santa Clause, arts & crafts for the kids, face painting, and more. The Christmas Celebration at the school will include Wagon Rides, (Horse drawn wagon rides will be provided by Buggy Down Carriage) Caroling, Kids Crafts and Storytime with Free Books to Kids while supplies last, Face Painting, and refreshments. The crafts will include pine cone bird feeders and coloring pages with the possibility of more. The event is open and free to the public at Hillside Elementary.

Although, due to a lack of volunteers, the Holiday Lights Parade will not be held this year, Farwell’s Christmas celebration will continue on Saturday, December 8th where from 4 to 6 p.m. the Farwell Parks and Recreation Committee will sponsor a Tree Lighting Party. Mrs. Claus will be there for this kid friendly event and the whole family is invited. They will serve hot dogs, chips, water and cookies, and enjoy popcorn while watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Frosty the Snowman.”

Seating is limited. People are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

A Craft Station will also be there for making ornaments while supplies last.

Kids in Lake George won’t be left out of the fun. The Lake George Christmas Party will take place there on December 8th from noon to 3 p.m. The event is hosted by Lake George MI Info and Clare County Real Estate.
