The first ever Jackpine Conference Alumni Invitational track meet was held on June the 7th At the Harrison Track and Field. Each event allowed alumni from the Farwell, Harrison, Clare and Gladwin areas to relive their past days of glory from there track days. They had alumni of all ages including Gladwin track coach Frank Bonham, Harrison track coach and Clare alumni Tod Reeve from the class of 1982.
Competing in the Shot Put event had Clare and Harrison pinning off against each other. Local legend Bryan Johnson, of Clare class of 1992, came out of retirement to throw. His legendary status started back in 1992 when he set the Jackpine Conference record for the 110m hurdles, a record that still stands today. He continued on his winning ways showing no rust winning the shot put with a throw of 40ft 3 and a half inches beating out fellow competitor Brian See of Harrison.
On the girls side of the shot put ring pinned another local hero Kim McClure of Harrison against Lesley Johnson also of Harrison. Kim had an impressive performance throwing 31ft 6 inches. These two champions continued their throwing prowess taking the discuss events as well- Bryan with a throw of 92ft 5 inches, and Kim with a throw of 95ft 11 inches.
The next event was the long jump which had Gladwin girl’s, Margie Archibald and Ashley Smith competing against Harrison male jumper Christopher Pease. Chris won the male event with a jump of 16ft 6 and a half inches. Winner of the long jump on the female side was Margie Archibald with a very impressive jump 14ft 10 inches.
The running events started with the 100m hurdles. The guys event was won by Gladwin alumni Andrew Smith with a time of 17.97 seconds winning over Harrison alumni Chris Pease. The girls event was won by Gladwin’s own Margie Archibald with a time of 17.8 seconds winning over fellow Gladwin hurdler Ashley Smith.
Following this event was the 200 meter dash which had Gladwin’s own Margie Archibald, Emily Zelt and Nathan Rein going against Harrison’s lone runner Chris Pease. Margie won the female event, and Chris won the male event.
The next event was the premiere alumni event the Alumni Mile. The combatants in this event included Gladwin’s own Albert Adame, Nathan Rein, and James Balcirak, The
only female participant Stacey DeGeer, Harrison’s Track coach and Clare alumni Tod Reeve, and Harrison’s own Brian See. This was a very hard fought victory for Albert Adame, followed by James Balcirak both finishing with a time of 5 minutes 54 seconds.
The 100 meter dash was the most popular running event for the Jackpine alumni. This event on the women’s side was combated by Flying G’s own Ashley Smith, Emily Zelt, and Margie Archibald. Another hard fought victory for Margie winning the event with a time of 14.75 seconds.
Following the women were the men, competing in this event was Farwell’s Cody Terrian, Harrison’s Chris Pease, Flying G’s, Nathan Rein, Andrew Smith, Albert Adame, and Frank Bonham. The winner of this event was Chris Pease with a time of 11.59 seconds. But the most memberable part of this race was the inspirational run of Frank Bonham, Showing kids over half his age that he could still compete running a time of 15 seconds.
